One way someone might end up telling themself that they believe is if they grow up in a Christian community and feel good about calling themself a Christian. This being all they know, they would do it, without having to actually trust Him. (Of course, when something they feel is more desirable comes along, they would denounce His name and start living sinfully.)
In other words, if someone can’t even trust their sense of clear thinking, there is no sense of thinking that someone can trust. That would mean they couldn’t even trust that thinking. But to know the Bible, we have to trust some sense of thinking.

They were already weak to many other temptations, had “lack of self-control” (7:5), are twice commanded to not (6:18, 20), and are thrice asked “do you not know” (6:15,16, 19). Furthermore, it says that “the members of Christ” can be taken and made “members of an harlot” (6:15; it does not say “forfeit membership”).
